Frequently Asked Questions
Understanding OCD & Treatment
What exactly is OCD?
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) involves distressing, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or mental acts (compulsions) used to ease the anxiety those thoughts cause. It is a debilitating condition that affects around 3% of the population.
How does treatment work?
We use CBT with ERP, which involves gradually facing the thoughts that trigger anxiety while learning not to perform compulsions. It sounds daunting, but we go at your pace, providing hopeful, steady support throughout. CBT allows further exploration of the beliefs that drive the OCD, challenging them so they no longer have as much control.
How can your therapists help me?
The only proven and recommended therapy for OCD and related conditions is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy that includes Exposure and Response Prevention. This is often referred to as ‘CBT with ERP’. It is considered the golden standard of OCD treatment. All of our therapists are BABCP accredited which means they have trained and studied to an exceptionally high standard - OCD Action, the leading OCD charity in the UK, recommends individuals seeking support for OCD ensure their therapists are accredited by the BABCP (not to be confused with the BACP) . Our therapists receive regular supervision from OCD specialists, ensuring their practice is of the highest quality. Furthermore, they have accessed additional training from the UK's leading experts on OCD.
Sessions & Practicalities
Online vs in-person therapy?
Both are highly effective. Online sessions offer comfort and privacy at home, while in-person sessions take place in Devon. The choice depends entirely on what makes you feel most at ease.
Is therapy right for me?
If OCD is limiting your life, specialized ERP/CBT is likely suitable. Our therapists also work with depression, trauma, and neurodiversity. A free 15-minute consultation is the best way to discuss your specific needs without pressure.
How is CBT and ERP different to generic talking therapies and counselling?
CBT with ERP help an individual develop new strategies that will challenge and overcome their OCD, whilst also addressing the underlying beliefs that drive the behaviour. Generic counselling doesn't help individuals with OCD to do things differently and doesn't challenge the beliefs that led to the OCD developing in the first place, so you can be stuck in therapy for many years without any change. ERP has been shown to help in as little as 6 sessions!
Fees & Privacy
How much does it cost?
Consultations are free. Online 50-minute sessions are £90, and in-person sessions are £125. We believe in being transparent about costs so you can plan your recovery journey with confidence.
